We had our inaugural launch of the College of Engineering’s Aerial Photo Senior Design Team’s balloon. We wanted the device to accomplish several tasks:
1) Float upwards, to a mile high
2) Send GPS tracking signals
3) Pop the balloon
4) Parachute the camera and electronics to safety.
Success! We were able to track the device for most of its trip by cell phone. We lost the signal for a few minutes when it reached a higher altitude, but regained the signal during its descent. We happily found it in a farm field about five miles SW of our launch location. Go team!
